Project HealthDesign is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Pioneer Portfolio. They have generously funded our work on FitBaby for the next two years with a grant to PI Gillian Hayes and Co-PI Karen Cheng (one of our amazing collaborators from Charles Drew University). Project Health Design is focused on the use of ODLs to support chronic care. Here is a little excerpt on ODLs from the Project Health Design website:

Observations of Daily Living (ODLs)

Observations of daily living are sensations, feelings-thoughts-attitudes, and behaviors that occur in the course of everyday life – such as sleep patterns, diet, exercise levels, pain episodes, and mood – that are not typically part of one’s clinical record, but are critical to managing an individual’s health and guiding their treatment.

Researchers: Leslie Liu and Gillian Hayes

Personal health records have enormous potential to improve both health documentation and patient care. The introduction and adoption of these systems however, has have been relatively slow. We conducted three different types of studies focused on evaluating PHR systems: a traditional usability evaluation, clinician interviews, and a heuristic evaluation. The results of these evaluations demonstrate that a combination of usability, functionality, and socio-cultural influences are impeding PHR adoption and use. They also demonstrate that heuristic evaluation, using modified heuristics, can be used to find many, although not all, of the challenges to use of particular healthcare technologies.

Evaluating the Usefulness and Usability of Collaborative Personal Health Record Systems

Evaluating the Usefulness and Usability of Collaborative Personal Health Record Systems

Leslie S. Liu & Gillian R. Hayes

Personal health record systems (PHR) have great potential to improve both health documentation and patient care. The introduction and adoption of these systems, however, have been relatively slow. In this work, through usability evaluations and clinician interviews, we evaluated the usability of, usefulness of, and the ability to communicate and share information through PHR. We describe the results of our evaluation, which demonstrate how a combination of usability, functionality, and socio-cultural influences are impeding PHR adoption and use.

PatientsLikeMe: Empowerment and Representation in a Patient-Centered Social Network

Jed R. Brubaker, Caitlin Lustig, & Gillian R. Hayes

We examine the patient networking site PatientsLikeMe relative to current trends in medicine toward patient-centered care and empowerment. We focus on both patient and institutional demands for personal medical data. Given PatientsLikeMe’s mixture of social networking and health management tools, we consider the role of online health communities in the changing patient/provider relationship, and the use of patient-provided medical data.
