NSF Graduate Fellowships Announced

STAR group did really well on the NSF front this year. First year PhD students Meg Cramer and Jed Brubaker won a fellowship and an honorable mention, respectively. STAR alumna, currently a PhD student at CMU, Gabi Marcu was also a winner.

The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. The NSF welcomes applications from all qualified students and strongly encourages under-represented populations, including women, under-represented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, to apply for this fellowship.

This highly competitive program comes with three years of funding.

STAR Alumna Gabi Marcu awarded Microsoft Graduate Women’s Scholarship

Congratulations to Gabriela Marcu who was awarded a scholarship from Microsoft.

From the Microsoft Research website:

The Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarship is a one-year scholarship program for outstanding women graduate students and is designed to help increase the number of women pursuing a PhD. This program supports women in the second year of their graduate studies. Women who are interested in this scholarship must apply during first year of graduate studies. Scholarships are granted by Microsoft Research at the discretion of Microsoft.

Sen Wins UAL Scholarship

Congratulations to Sen Hirano who recently won a scholarship from the United Agribusiness League & United Agricultural Benefit Trust Scholarship Program.

From the UAL website:

“Since 1989, United Agribusiness League and United Agricultural Benefit Trust have collectively awarded more than $600,000 in scholarship monies to students in need of funding for college. Previous scholarship winners have taken their place in management, government, market development, international sales and foreign trade.”

Civic Engagement at UCI

At the Celebration of Teaching, Gillian Hayes was recognized for “Pedagogical Innovation” for transforming an Informatics course into one more focused on service learning. The focus of this award on Civic Engagement reflects a wider push on campus to focus on getting out in the community and using what we know and do to help change the world. There will also be a new minor in civic engagement offered starting this fall.

Gabi wins Honorable Mention in CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Competition

Congratulations to Gabriela Marcu who was selected for Honorable Mention in the highly competitive CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Competition.

From the letter congratulating her:
“This year’s nominees were a very impressive group. A number of them were commended for making significant contributions to more than one research project, several were authors or coauthors on multiple papers, others had made presentations at major conferences, and some had produced software artifacts that were in widespread use. Many of our nominees had been involved in successful summer research or internship programs, many had been teaching assistants, tutors, or mentors, and a number had significant involvement in community volunteer efforts. It is quite an honor to be selected for Honorable Mention from this group.”

IDC papers and Anita Borg Scholarships

Silvia and Gabi won the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship.

Mo had his first paper accepted… its a short paper to be presented as a poster at IDC this year!

Silvia, Nick, and the rest of the Lory crew had a paper accepted to IDC as well… a short paper with accompanying demo on Locative Storytelling for Children.

Its been a good couple of weeks for the STAR group. Yay!
